The Andover Sound Interview

Monday 13th July 2009

The sudden death of an Andover schoolboy has prompted a local businesswoman to make sure we know what to do in an emergency.

Nicky Bates, who’s a trained nurse, set up First Aid Angels earlier this year along with a former colleague. The company initially speciailised in training people at work.  Then Nurse Nicky, as she’s known, was approached by someone wanting her to come to their home and run a first aid course for their family.

It was prompted by what happened to thirteen year old John Hanson pupil, Jamie Gentleman, who suffered a cardiac arrest when he was at a party back in March.

Now First Aid Angels are offering similar ‘First Aid Parties’ in people’s homes as an informal way of learning vital life saving skills.

“Just like to say what a wonderful idea… and Iv’e actually met you a few years ago when you nursed my mother on Clarke ward in Winchester hospital. You always had a smile and nothing was too much trouble, she always looked out for you to come on duty and felt safe knowing you where there. I wish you well and I know you will succeed because you truly are an angel!”
